description

DevOps Engineer, Linux, PHP, AWS, Systems Administrator

A DevOps Engineer is required for my client who is a leading independent media and entertainment company located in the centre of Oxford. The DevOps Engineer will be working within a small team of Engineers and play a vital part in building great cloud focused products and services within a highly technical and niche environment. The DevOps Engineer will also be part of the team as they expand and set up the DevOps tool kit, testing and playing around with the latest technologies to fit in with business requirements.

The ideal DevOps Engineer will have experience in software development and have an in-depth understanding of robust deployment processes but as they are open to a variety of levels, someone coming from a Software Engineer, Developer, Systems Engineer or Administrator background could also be suitable. As the area of DevOps grows within the business someone from a DBA background or Software/Application Support Analyst background could work too. The main thing you need is a great overview of technology and how DevOps can benefit a tech organisation. Great communication skills are also vital as the team is collaborative and social.

You’ll be working within a tight-knit development team on exciting projects with plenty of technical challenge to get your teeth into.

Salary: Negotiable depending on experience
Location: Oxford city centre

The DevOps Engineer will have the following Main Duties and Responsibilities:

• Maintain, expand and improve existing Continuous Integration, testing and deployment of web applications and services – Technology such as Jenkins would be great to have experience with but not a “Must have”.
• Active participation in projects requiring server infrastructure
• Pro-active communication of technical problems and needs
• Ensuring the highest possible availability of live systems under your remit, including willingness to work out-of-hours in urgent circumstances
• Adhering to company software standards
• Adhering to and enforcing company security standards

The DevOps Engineer will have the following key skills and Experience:

• We are looking for a minimum 1 year of experience in a commercial environment – working within one area of either development or support and infrastructure.
• A strong academic background is also preferred, with a degree in computing, science, mathematics or similar, or equivalent industry experience but this is by no means a prerequisite for the role.
• Someone with experience in the entertainment industry – Media, Gaming, TV, Publishing etc would be useful.

The DevOps Engineer will have the following Desirable skills:

• Linux/Unix experience
• Ideally some knowledge of MySQL, Oracle or similar databases
• Any AWS would be a great advantage to have
• PHP, Python, Bash, Ruby, Perl etc – some scripting and development skills would be awesome
• Containers (Docker) Kubernetes would be a great addition but may not be utilised when on board.
• The Hashicorp suite or similar (Terraform, Vault, Vagrant, Packer, Nomad)
• Windows configuration experience with PowerShell/ Carbon
• Chef, Puppet, Salt, Ansible etc – all great to have.
• Worked in an agile environment – Scrum/Kanban
• Working as a developer or ability to code – PHP, C++, C#, Java, Python, JavaScript
• Working as a Systems Administrator embedded in a development team would really be an advantage

So, if you are an ambitious individual who is already in a DevOps role or someone who wants to make the transition across, then this role would be ideal for you. You may come from an Engineer or Developer background or from a Support focused environment, either way it would be great to discuss the role in more detail.

As the role is close to a train station, it can be commutable from all over Thames Valley and the surrounding counties to Oxfordshire. Places like – Witney, Eynsham, Kidlington, Carterton, Bicester, Abingdon, Didcot, Reading, Northampton, Banbury, Swindon are all suitable locations to commute from.
